Yui Matsumoto

The theme of my work is “the joy of decay.” To me, “decay” is “preparation for being reborn as something new.” Tilling a field led me to reflect on decay, and through it I remembered that I, too, had gone through a mental “decay” after painful events in my past. I felt strongly that all of that decay had played an important role in my next new beginning. A creature called “Posemin” appears in my work. I began drawing it as an emotional anchor at a time when I had mentally decayed. In that sense, Posemin may be a kind of rebirth of myself.
