Profile
Taking as motifs the gods and divine beasts found throughout Japan and Asia, I visualize unseen beings and energies from my own perspective. The invisible presences and mystical powers I depict are rooted in nature worship (animism) and in Asian mythology and thought.
As culture has developed since the age when people lived alongside the unseen, such presences have faded from awareness. That is precisely why I hope, through art, to make them feel close at hand.

炎のようなかたちの頭に、二本の枝角。ぽってりとした体に、大きな渦巻きの瞳。黄色からオレンジ、赤へと移ろうグラデーションが、まるで燃えるような生命力を感じさせる。
宮間夕子による立体作品「餅ノ子#3」。樹脂とアクリルで制作された、愛嬌たっぷりの神獣だ。神聖でありながら、どこか親しみやすい。暮らしの中にそっと置いて、日々を見守ってもらいたくなる一点。
