ATSUSHI MAEDA / 前田 純
Atsushi Maeda
Boys of street culture, drawn in hard-boiled line
Born in 1978 and based in Tokyo. Influenced at 19 by the bandes dessinées of Jean Giraud (Moebius), Maeda drew intricate comics before working as a character designer and art director in the game industry, launching his career as an artist in May 2022.
His fine black-and-white line drawings fuse street culture with a contemporary hard-boiled sensibility, evoking stories that are both cool and comical. The common thread of his work is the "Hard-boiled Smile" — inspired by the subtle smile of Marlowe in the film The Long Goodbye. Working with manga pens, black markers and a tablet, he is especially committed to freehand live drawing, and exhibits actively in solo and group shows in Japan and abroad.
