Profile
I express a fusion of “anime and manga culture” and “comedy culture,” centered on painting and extending to sculpture, murals and live painting. Building on works influenced by Japanese subculture, I integrate traditional Japanese painting and calligraphy in pursuit of layered expression. In recent years I have been fusing and abstracting graffiti, manga onomatopoeia and Jomon-like ritual patterns, exploring the expressive possibilities between sign and language, abstraction and figuration. I am currently pursuing self-sufficiency in the countryside on the outskirts of Tokyo, seeking to unite farming and art.

ABOUT THE WORKAbout the work
渦巻く雲、うねる線、キャラクターの顔や手、そして「ドドド」と迫る文字。モノトーンの大画面いっぱいに、マンガの記号と日本画のモチーフが渦を巻くように重なり合う。
ジャガ一郎による「シン雪山童子図」。雪山童子とは、真理の言葉を求めて身を投げたという仏教説話の主人公。曾我蕭白をはじめ多くの絵師が描いてきた画題を、ジャガ一郎はマンガとお笑いの感覚で大胆に再構築する。1167mm四方の圧倒的なスケールで描かれた、作家の代表的な大作。
