Profile

I create paintings that interpret Japanese folktales from my own perspective, reconstructing them with a playful, contemporary sensibility.

While building on the structures and conventions of the old tales, I use pop characters and vivid colors free from the fixed ideas of the stories, and bring scenes from different moments in time together within a single picture, expressing a fantastical, relaxed and humorous world.

「ひとつだけ、約束を。」唇に指をあてた彼女のまなざしから、この絵は始まる。

下敷きにあるのは昔話『うぐいすの里』。開けてはいけない奥の座敷、あっけなく破られる約束、梅の枝から響くホーホケキョ。やのやはその筋書きを一枚のキャンバスにばらまき、時間の順番をほどいてしまう。襖の向こうで宴に興じる豚たち、湯船に飛び込む「ドボンッ」、そしてなぜか路上には“BUTABUCKS COFFEE”のキッチンカー。遠い昔の物語と、テイクアウトのカップを手に歩く今日の彼女が、同じ午後の光の中に並んでいる。

珊瑚色の髪、ラベンダーの影、ミントグリーンの文字。マーカーの線は迷いがないのに、どこか力が抜けている。吹き出しや擬音が画面にリズムを刻み、視線はページをめくるように絵の中を何度も行き来する。

教訓めいた昔話が、ここでは少し間の抜けた、愛すべき群像劇に変わる。約束を破るのはいつだって私たちのほうで、それでも思わず笑ってしまう。そんな人間らしさごと抱きしめるような一枚。
