Profile

Daisuke Sawai presents works on the theme of “connection.” Sawai began making art under the strong influence of skateboarding. His starting point was a life in which fire-based graphic design, ubiquitous in skateboard culture, was taken for granted: flaming skateboard deck graphics and brand logos, and corporate characters with fire motifs. This lived experience prompted him to reflect on the existence of fire.

Understanding fire, as used in beliefs and customs surrounding it, as “a catalyst that connects with other worlds,” he seeks to express the melancholy and the exaltation of humankind as it continues to “connect” with an ever-expanding civilization. His original character, “burning bunny,” expresses this connection with the present day through a variety of means.
