《Twin Dragons》
Koji Ohashi
Original (ED 1/2)
2022 Shadowbox, paper
44cm×56cm×6cm
Shadowbox is an “art of light and shadow” in which many copies of the same picture are cut out and layered to create a three-dimensional painting. Kanae Ohashi, who brought this technique to Japan, won renown chiefly in Europe with works based on Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment and others; since 2017 she has worked with the colorful, pop original drawings of her eldest son, Koji Ohashi, developing a parent-and-child collaborative art without parallel in the world. This work brings together a unique, striking original drawing, created in response to his mother’s wish to “make a shadowbox from a dragon picture no one has ever seen,” with her virtuoso shadowbox craftsmanship, refined down to every single scale. It caused a sensation in the field and marked the beginning of a series of dragon works.

Profile
Born in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture. He loved drawing from childhood and won prizes in numerous competitions. Four years spent in New York in his mid-teens gave him a pop sense of color unusual for a Japanese artist. After graduating from Kyoto University, he worked at a major advertising agency. Though he drifted away from art for some time, in 2017 he began drawing original artwork at the request of his mother, Kanae Ohashi, a world-renowned shadowbox artist, and his love of painting was revived. His pictures feature characters such as “Ruki-bon,” a fiery, intense-eyed three-year-old modeled on his second son, and “Prince Manhattan,” modeled on the teddy bear that has lived with him since his New York days, alongside distinctive dragons and Japanese motifs. Through colorful, vivid divisions of color, bold compositions and narrative detail, he creates a world entirely his own. His mother’s extraordinary technique breathes new life into these originals, and their mother-and-son shadowbox collaborations, without parallel anywhere in the world, have won great acclaim not only in Japan but also in the Principality of Monaco. In 2024 he held a solo exhibition in New York, his second home; it proved so popular that the exhibition was extended, an unprecedented success for an unknown artist making his New York debut.
His dream is to deliver “art that brings joy and happiness to anyone who sees it” to people around the world. The painter he most admires is Katsushika Hokusai. Favorite things: peaches and cats.
